Episode Name: A Tale of Two Sisters

Episode Number: 241

Show notes can be found at:

http://onceuponatimepodcast.com/241

Notes:

The story begins “A long time ago”, but no specific time associated to it. A lot like Star Wars, except for the “in a galaxy far, far, away” part.

The Queen put a note in the bottle. What does the note say? Does it clarify what was in the diary/

Elsa finally allowed Anna to marry Kristoff. Elsa isn’t entirely happy about it, but she is allowing it.

Who is on the Storybrooke Beautification Society? Mice? Fairies? Helpful animals in a forest?

vlcsnap-2014-09-29-22h08m02s42

The discussion between Emma, doing the “right” thing of saving a life and how it effects Regina. Decision can have ripple effects on other people, good or bad.

Even though Regina has made strides to be good and to be a hero, she still pays for the mistakes of the past. It’s similar to someone with a drinking problem making good choices now, then someone who hasn’t been around them during their time of making good choices, the person trying to be better is still know as the person with the problem by someone who hasn’t been around them lately.

When situations like Marion calling her a “monster” happen, it can make you not want to try to make good decisions to do better, because you will always be know by what you’ve done, not what you are doing (better) now.

Robin is in a tough spot, between being in love with Regina and following the vow of marriage to his (now alive) wife and the code of trying to be a noble person.

We discuss the difference of how viewers of Once Upon a Time recated to David Nolan’s actions with Mary Margaret in season 1 and Robin’s actions now.

Except for Robin, no one stood up for the new Regina to Marion. Charming, Emma, Henry didn’t. Snow was concerned for her, but didn’t stand up for her to Marion.

It’s good to have a designated driver when you’ve been drinking, but be wary of a “sleepy” designated driver.

Why didn’t Elsa find the book in the attic desk before? It appears she searched and found their Mother’s dress?

Was the previous Queen of Arendelle, Elsa’s Mother or was she the adoptive Mother of Elsa? Was Elsa’s real Mother the White Witch from Narnia?

Elsa still hasn’t learned to control her power, fear still causes it to react with her.

Elsa read too much into the entry in her Mother’s diary. Part of the arc of Season 4A is why her parents went to Misthaven, and who they went to see. Rumpel? Merlin? Yen Sid? Someone else?

Who originally owned the mansion that Belle happened upon for their honeymoon? Was it a trap?

Is Sidney manipulating Regina by showing her what he wants her to see for his own purposes?

Thanks to ABC and Disney for providing a review copy of the OUAT Season 3 BluRay discs.

Do you have to own the discs of Once Upon a Time? Can’t you just stream them?

There are many ways that people can get/view/consume TV shows, but we think there is still a place to own either DVD or BluRay discs. The quality of the look of the episodes and the ownership of the episodes in either DVD or BluRay will allow you to enjoy the episodes without the worry about a legal streaming service ever removing OUAT to make room for another show. That plus, some of the extras still make Season 3 a must own.

If you haven’t already, order your OUAT Season 3 DVD/BluRay sets with our affiliate link: http://www.onceuponatimepodcast.com/ouatS3

Commentaries

In a way, the commentaries are (at this point) taking the place of the Official OUAT Podcast. Good insights included and it was a plus to have Robert and Colin, but we wish that Robbie Kay, Rebecca Mader or others in the cast could have been included as in years past.

Deleted Scenes
I felt Mr. Van Winkel would have been a great scene to leave in the episode, because I want to believe that there are many fairy tale characters throughout the OUAT storyline. By leaving in this scene, you wouldn’t have to announce a new character reveal, you would know that any character is possible.

There were many deleted scenes that (to me) are worth owning the discs for.

Bloopers
I wouldn’t consider this segment bloopers, I would consider this “the goofiest moments” of them all. Fun, but not bloopers.

Wicked Villians
I loved the insight into what makes a villain, or on the flip side, a hero. Peter Pan and Zelena were missing, and I felt that they should have been included, since they were central villians to the A and B arc of Season 3.

Tale of Ariel
This was my favorite. I enjoyed the parts of creating and bringing Ariel to ‘Once Upon a Time’.

Disney Once Again notes:

I keep thinking the opening song was from Lilo and Stitch’s Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride.

Ice Worker’s intro great peek into the Norwegian life and the background of Kristoff and Sven, also giving clues to the story we will see.

Ice layer – breaking through. The two layers. People have use for the ice, if it’s controlled and cut to manageable pieces. The song alludes to the land’s frozen heart worth mining. Ice has magic (To preserve, stop time of decay), the song says. Watch your step, let it go! Stronger than 100 men.

The Frozen Heart (Ice Worker’s Song) lyrics
Born of cold and winter air
And mountain rain combining
This icy force both foul and fair
Has a frozen heart worth mining

Cut through the heart, cold and clear
Strike for love and strike for fear
See the beauty sharp and sheer
Split the ice apart
And break the frozen heart

Beautiful, powerful, dangerous, cold
Ice has a magic can’t be controlled
Stronger than one, stronger than ten
Stronger than a hundred men

Born of cold and winter air
And mountain rain combining
This icy force both foul and fair
Has a frozen heart worth mining

Cut through the heart, cold and clear
Strike for love and strike for fear
There’s beauty and there’s danger here
Split the ice apart
Beware the frozen heart

Little Anna is like Lady, “The skies awake, so I’m awake”.

the-skys-awake

The little Anna and Elsa are so cute. Little Anna reminded me of Agnes in Despicable Me. Anna knows just how to get Elsa out of bed.

The empty hall became a playroom with Elsa’s ice magic. We see Olaf for the first time. We see bits of situations we will see later; Anna sliding down snowy hills, falling into snow, going from one snowy hill to another, then when Elsa slipped and couldn’t magically build a snow hill for her to land on, she quickly show an ice bolt at Anna and injured her. The hair color change is a physical sign of something deeper changing.

It’s interesting that the King knew exactly what to do and where to go. OUAT bit: The floor that the map landed on looked like the floor in Rumpel’s study. He had a book and a map to go to the trolls. Had he gone there before? Why? With who? The King mentioned that Elsa was born with the power. OUAT bit: Pabbie removed all memories of Elsa’s magic, and only leave the fun memories. There were many potions and curses in OUAT that would block or remove certain memories. Instead of learning to control

The storm scene was incredible.

The stones in the burial scene reminded me of Stonehenge or rune stones.

Kristoff’s Sven voice is funny

Open up the gates, like Willy Wonka.

All the points of most little girls; Queen, princess, coronation day, opening the gates and people from everywhere are coming to see you.

Another Princess sing a song out a window.

Elsa’s coronation outfit is very British.

First time in forever; Anna fun expectation, Elsa anxious, worry and fear.

Disney Once Again notes:

Note: We totally forgot to mention the Aurora or Phillip character in Once Upon a Time. Sorry about that.

Intro Credit lettering/art

There is a storybook opening, but no Once Upon a Time in a book. However, there was Once in the title song, “Once Upon a Dream”.

In the opening narration, it mentioned, “Their (The King and Queen) wish was granted,” and Aurora was born.

Vibrant colors

931133_1327050502749_full

Awesome 3D look to the crowd, changing the timing of each level of horses, people etc to make it look natural (That people and animals traveled at different speeds).

A number of great flydowns with the multiplane camera.

Awesome dreamy sequences when the good fairies gave their gifts of beauty and song. Fantasia-esque (1940).

Maleficent – Evil Fairy. The Queen is afraid of Maleficent, “You’re not offended?”

disney_quotes_sleeping-beauty_maleficent

The scepter click on the floor was weird sounding.

Meriwether – A Ray of Hope. Changing death to sleep, until true love’s kiss will break the curse.

The animation is a work of art. Spinning Wheel fire. Reflections in the castle.

“Our magic doesn’t work that way”

Even walls have ears. Like mirrors in OUAT.

Turn the princess into a flower (Shadowing of Beauty and the Beast), but Maleficent will send frost.

Flora’s new plan will not include magic. Adam and Eddie get the idea from this?

Maleficent’s Forbidden Mountains – similar name to Tolkien’s Mount Doom.

XiCA4ts

Maleficent’s goofy troops.

Maleficent told her Raven to search for a maiden with lips Red as the Rose. Another tie back to Snow White?

Another princess that cleans, and a shot through the window.

If you tell a wish, it won’t come true

Have faith in your dream.

As long as you keep believing, the dream that you wish will come true.

You can change your life by believing in a secret dream.

They can’t order me to stop dreaming.

Another instance of animals helping her clean and get ready for the day. Singing as she takes a shower.

Cinderella is kind to the animals.

Jack has a creepy voice.

The animation is more cartoonish, and less like a panting come to life (Like Snow White).

LUcifer the cat. Funny.

Bruno dreaming.

Cinderella tries to find the good in people and cats.

Snow White and Cinderella wears Danish shoes.

Cinderella takes care of the family in the house and feeds all the animals.

Lucifer was like a king. Licking the milk one drop of a time.

We care about mice, instead of wanting to get rid of them.

At Disneyland, Cinderella doesn’t have a ride or attraction, but the castle yes.

“Close the door, Cinderella,” When a boss tells you to close the door, is never a good thing

The step-sisters ringing bells and calling Cinderella.

Lucifer deserved those awful step-sisters “practicing”

What a great scene fading into Cinderella singing the song.

Disney Once Again notes:

So many Classic songs and music.

“When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do”

Wishes give an ordinary person the opportunity to be special. A wish can make everyone special.

Another beginning with a book. It begins with “Once night a long time ago…”

The “fly down” to Geppetto’s window was dark and murky, but there was another fly down coming.

Geppetto treated Pinocchio like his son. Geppetto also cared for all of his creations like his children, too. Geppetto’s “world” was created from wood, gears, etc.

The water effect (Even seeing Pinocchio walking through Cleo’s fishbowl) was incredible.

40-Pinocchio-33sm

The clocks shows violence, drunkeness, spanking, etc.

Figaro was jealous of Pinocchio, like Tinkerbell was of Wendy.

Geppetto was smoking in bed.

Geppetto’s Wish was that Pinocchio to be a real boy. Jiminy initially had not faith/belief in Geppetto’s wish “What a lovely thought, but not practical”.

When Jiminy screamed for everything to be quite, he stopped all the clocks. No one will wake up on time.

The Blue Fairy (partially granted) Wish #1 – She gave Pinocchio life, but didn’t make him a real boy, yet.

The Blue Fairy told Pinocchio to be “Brave, Truthful and Unselfish”

I want to thank Todd and Kristen from the Walt Sent Me Podcast for their thoughts on Pinocchio. Please check out their podcast

Disney Once Again notes:

No “Once Upon a Time” opening from a book.

We see a beautifully recreated London. In a way, it was like taking us there. It was a real place, not a Fairy Tale place.

Peter Pan chose the house because they believed. This was a special group of children that believed. It could have been any group, but he chose them.

Children still believe in magic, adults don’t. They’ve grown out of belief.

Nana gave the kids tonic. I used to have to take Cod Liver Oil. Did Peter Pan give my parents this idea?

Kids play fun games with dangerous things; Pointed wooden swords and hangers swinging at each other. Plus they’re jumping on the bed. We never were allowed to jump on the bed.

Children teach us to have fun in the moment, today.

They drew a Treasure Map on the Mr. Darling’s shirt front.

Geocaching and letter boxing is a bit of treasure hunting today.

Mr. Darling explaining that there is a difference between stories and reality, but in this story – belief made this story true.

Moving Wendy out of the nursery and to her own room is a physical move from being a child to an adult. Mr. Darling wanted to remove her from the nursery (The land a childlike belief to adult practicality)

Poor Nana. Nana had a lot of jobs in the Darling home, but one little tripping issue over the blocks and out she goes.

“Everybody has to grow up”

Can’t you still be an adult and still have a childlike belief.

This animated movie had so much imagination; Flying to a magical island, shadows that separate from a body, etc.

The music was Classic Disney music.

You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly! [From Peter Pan] by Disney on Grooveshark

To buy the digital version of Heigh Ho Mozart, use this affiliate link: http://www.onceuponatimepodcast.com/heighhomozart

This was the first, male Peter Pan.

A Tink with depth and flaws. Tink is a like a mood ring. She changes colors based on her mood.

Peter Pan wasn’t very kind to Wendy, “Girls talk too much”, etc.

Peter tells Wendy “You can be our Mother”. Even though Peter Pan made a place for Lost Boys who stay young, believe in magic, he knew that something was missing, a Mother figure. Someone to care for and nurture the group.

Notice that Big Ben was on 8:15, the same as the clock in Storybrooke

We get a fly over of London

The pirates were very piratey and not Disney “family friendly”;

Captain Hook: [grabbing Smee] I’ve got it! Tiger Lily, Smee!
Mr. Smee: [nervously] T-T-Tiger Lily, Captain?
Captain Hook: The chief’s daughter. She’ll know where Pan is hiding.
Mr. Smee: B-B-But-But will she talk, Captain?
Captain Hook: Oh, a little persuasion might be in order. Now let me see… Boiling in oil? Uh, keelhauling? Eh, marooning?

Later on when Tink gives up the location of Peter Pan’s hideout (Hangman’s Tree)

Captain Hook: [about to lower a bomb into Peter Pan's hideout] And now, Smee, to take care of master Peter Pan.
Mr. Smee: But, Captain, wouldn’t it be more humane-like to slit his throat?
Captain Hook: Aye, that it would, Mr Smee. But I have given me word not to lay a finger, or a hook, on Peter Pan. And Captain Hook never breaks a promise.

Cannibal Cove

Mermaid Lagoon

Hook shot and killed the accordion player

The animation was so good

I love the pirates, because they came from all over the world, even Sweden.

When you fly with Peter Pan, that also means you can float and stand on clouds.

Tinkerbell treated flying like swimming in the air.

Lost Boys, Hook and Peter Pan speak Tink.

Tink was very mean. She told the Lost Boys to shoot down Wendy. Mean Tink.

Please click on the link below and Tweet some love while you listen. Thanks.

Hook was pretty sneaky. He kidnapped Tigerlilly, but the Indians thought the Lost Boys did.

Mermaids really liked Peter Pan, but they were mean to Wendy, too. They tried to drown her.

From http://www.perry.com/disney/subs/mermaids.jpg

There were live mermaids at Disneyland, too.

Peter Pan would have been a great ventriloquist, they way he threw his voice.

We didn’t get much explanation about crowing, but Peter Pan did crow a number of times.

Skull Rock.

There used to be a Skull Rock and Pirate Ship at Disneyland.

Great sword fights.

Wendy, lucky to not get shot our of the sky, drowned or eaten by the crocodile after walking the plank, was the moral voice of the movie.

Smee is a busy body, he hears everything and is perfect to use in dialogue exposition and move the story ahead.

Pan brings peace to the land by returning Tigerlilly.

Hook manipulates Tink. Different than the OUAT show Hook.

Those in Never Never Land forgot their Mother.

Smee and the other pirates (not Hook) were crying at the Your Mother and Mine song.

Smee brings out Hook’s “Sunday Best” hooks. Golden hooks.

Robin Hood show notes

Alan-a-Dale referred to the song he sang as a folk song, but its sounded an awful lot like a country song to me.

Folk music was big at the time, so maybe referring to a folk song might related better to the early 1970’s audience?

Prince John was comedically evil.

The snake face animation was incredible showing the 3d look of the face as it turned.

It was interesting to see the Prince with psychological problems. Pretty bold for a Disney cartoon. Seemed a bit like the Smother’s Brothers.

Robin Hood and Little John are master’s of disguise.

Little John made a Medieval Haunted Mansion floating crystal ball.

We see another mirror in a Disney animated film (Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and (so far) this one).

Robin Hood is a reflection of Hope for tough times, like Once Upon a Time shows.

It was a great choice of all the animals for all the characters.

Great kid voices for the bunnies and turtle.

What is “Oo De Lally”???

Boob jokes – in a Disney movie???

You will go from an Outlaw to a Hero, like the storylines of Season 3 of Once Upon a Time.

Friar Tuck kept sipping Robin Hood’s burnt stew – Ewww.

Lots of late 60’s, early 70’s vernacular and music (Hip Daddy Cat music).

Lots of marching.

Tail spinning and arrow flying by sounds made by a person? Maybe a you Ben Burtt? just kidding

We see one crossbow in a movie filled with regular bows and arrows

It was so great to see how the animals took care of each other, even when they were in jail, and when the church mouse gave her last coin for the church poor box.

Sir Hiss was Prince John’s second in command, but Once Upon a Time baddies have no second in commands.

Prince John’s guards shoot arrows like Stormtroopers shoot laser beams.

Little John dressed up in a disguise like a 70’s Pimp Daddy (with a cane, even)

begone-long-one

Another animated Disney film that starts with “Once Upon a Time”

BATB is basically a morality play teaching a lesson about not being selfish

Never judge a book by its cover. Books are Belle’s treasures.

Belle mentions she was reading a book about beanstalks and ogres.

Another theme is that reading makes you a hero.

The opening song that also serves as exposition of the story.

Beauty-and-the-beast-disneyscreencaps.com-519

Gaston says he wants Belle because she’s beautiful, but there are other beautiful women in town, maybe he sees Belle for more than beauty?

Belle-Wolves-(Beauty_and_the_Beast)

The wolf chase scenes were chilling.

There is a classic horror film look to some of the scenes; the gate, the castle, etc.

The Beast entrance was scary, as well.

Belle breaks many stereotypes; She says no to marrying the strongest man, she reads, she wants adventure instead of staying at home.

Belle bold sacrifice – “Take me instead (of my father)”.

The Beast wants her to stay forever (like Rumpel said in OUAT).
