Here my thoughts for this episode

Love Regina talking Emma down it was great seeing young Emma and Lily
My question is since the apprentice told Lily the truth shouldn’t she go after the author Isaac…

My theory is the author going rewrite everything and the villains going to be the heroes and heroes going to be the villains and everyone going to disappear from Storybrook into enchanted forest and since we know Henry was born here he be left alone and he going to be the new author because Isaac will probably died and Henry will have to rewrite it back they way it was

Big love to the Roneys. New listener and first time emailing the show…so cue the music.

I have a theory that may be a simple ending to the season and put up a big bad for the next season. What if…like Emma’s potential for darkness was transferred to Lilly, they find a way to transfer Lilly’s darkness to Zalena’s baby, if she is truly pregnant? I totally do not like this theory but…you know how this show is with parallels. Yuck. Or perhaps the transferring vessels need to be of the same age so Emma may take back her potential for darkness. It’s seems Emma thinks she can carry all this darkness and still be light. But that would make Lilly and more importantly Mal happy. And I can see those two fitting into the Storybrooke community since it looks like Mal has become comfortable in the Mayor’s office.

I couldn’t help thinking that Regina and Emma were playing Cagney and Lacey.

I don’t know if Regina was showing “righteous anger.” Anger is anger whether you think it is wrong or right. I feel she was just so frustrated with Robin. Here she risks her safety to come rescue him and he’s like….”Thanks but no thanks.”

And that leaves the question…WHERE IS ROLAND anyway?! Oh, well. Maybe next episode he’ll come home from school.

Thanks for your podcasts,
Helen

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

I am on my lunch break walking the parking lot at about 3 AM as I type this. And Jeff, yes I do have some Star Wars references for you In a bit.

I only watched the episode once so I could be misrembering but I thought the Sorcerer sounded an awful lot like the Cave of Wonders in Aladdin.

I wonder if Andy and Eddie are Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans because one of the locations was Hopkins, MN which is where MST3K was based out of.

Lily telling Emma to shoot her reminded me of the climax of Return of the Jedi in the throne room when The Emperor taunted Luke to give into his hatred and strike him down so his journey to the dark side will be complete.

Here’s where I lose probably a bunch of Oncers – My heart sank when I saw Rebecca Mader in the credits and it has nothing to do with her. I don’t have any interest in the character. It’s not dislike in the JR Ewing love to hate way. I just want the character to go away. I don’t care what she does, I just want her scenes to be over as soon as possible to get on to something else. For me, Zelena is the Jar Jar Binks/NikkI and Paulo of Once Upon a Time.

But enough negativity. Thanks for the podcast and keep up the great work.

Chris

From Chris

I apologize for the double email But I want to clarify that I don’t mean to say that I think Rebecca Mader is to blame for my indifference to Zelena. It’s just that the writers haven’t done anything to make me personally care anything about the character. With Regina, Rumple, Cruella, Hook, Pan, and Robin, I wanted to know more about them right off the bat. With Zelena, I have none of that interest.

Maybe it’s just me.

From Chris Tipton

To answer your questions Jeff, i am a star wars nut!!! I love it!! As for my favorite episode this season, that would have to be “best laid plans”

Onto my feedback. Once got back in my good graces this week, while not a spectacular episode, still very good.

I seriously hope there is more to the Sorcerer. I hope this was just sort of like when they use the communicators in star wars…. If this is all there is to him is a big swirling blob then its a huge letdown. Nice to finally put to bed that they are different… Entities at least. So apparently it was still the author who wrote everything that came after he got trapped. Nice to have that addressed.

Im going to say Cruella is definitely gone. We saw the body and a coffin. Shes gone.

Im extremely disappointed that Regina took Belles heart without permission. It was amazing (and foolish) when Will told Rumple hes already in the process of stealing Belles heart. Im very proud of Rumple at least doing one thing right and stepping out of the way of Will and Belle. This was a very sad scene. After everything Rumples done i still somehow feel for him. I just wish he could get what he wants without hurting people.

Im glad Emma showed some remorse for Cruella and its nice to know last week was just a stepping stone and not as severe as i thought. I loves seeing more backstory between Emma and Lily. It was extremely heartbreaking. I actually like the twist that fate drove them together, and the way they handled Lilys life being inherently full of darkness made sense. Im actually starting to enjoy the way they’re handling Emma “going dark”, its just a steady slide. I hope there’s an epic payoff. I don’t really mind them using fate to explain all the conveniences away, but it is still kind of cheap. Regina talking Emma down was awesome, this whole scene was amazing. Im very glad Emma did the right thing. Maybe she won’t go dark? This definitely puts it in doubt a little bit. I do worry what them taking her to Storybrooke may unleash. I LOVE that the apprentice got to Lily in our world and told her everything. Very cool. I guess he can literally go to any realm at any time, and Lily calling him yoda was one of my favorite lines ever.

Zelena is pregnant…. WOW didn’t see this coming. Everyone was saying that Regina was probably pregnant, but no, this was just shocking to me. I do kind of wonder how Zelena got pregnant and Robin still never noticed the necklace. This was an awesome twist.

An update on last week, after listening to all the podcasts, rewatching the episode and more thought, i do like last weeks episode better. I still have some problems but i dont hate it so much anymore. I would say… 6.75/10 skinned authors. As for this week, i really enjoyed it. 8/10 dragon leashes

From Becca

This episode was killer. One of the best I can remember. Your first thoughts podcast hit on a lot of the things that stood out to me. Here are the things that have been on my mind since re-watching:

Emma: She seems to be in one never-ending jaw clench this season. I can see why. There is a lot piled on her plate right now-

regret over killing Cruella, (possibly a bit of satisfaction over killing Cruella as well??),
fear that killing Cruella means she is going dark (I know she holds to her own free will, but perhaps deep inside she is afraid that darkness is overtaking out of her control)
unforgiveness with her parents,
lily’s drama,
stuff with the author/Gold
Protecting Henry

I’m not so much concerned with her going dark due to a conscious choice, as I am of her being so overwhelmed by all of these stressors and reaching a breaking point.

I’d have to agree with some listeners about Emma needing to forgive her parents…the thing about forgiveness is: it’s for your own good to forgive others. Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending that the hurt never happened. In fact, ignoring a hurt and pretending it didn’t happen is basically the opposite of forgiveness. Forgiveness means that you accept that the choices were made, no matter how bad they were, and you refuse to let feelings of bitterness or hate affect your life and future decisions.

And forgiveness is a choice that sometimes must be made over and over again. I don’t expect Emma to be perfect and completely forgive her parents in an instant and never struggle with the decisions they made regarding her and Lily. I just want to see Emma start in the direction of coming to terms with the choices made. I want to see her choose to be an adult and recognize that her parents made a difficult decision that probably wasn’t ideal.

All this bitterness is doing is eating away at her. It is slowly draining the life out of her. She is losing her personality and the things that make her “Emma”. It seems that every episode she becomes more solemn and melancholy.

*And one more thing about forgiveness: the “guilty” party doesn’t have to be sorry to be forgiven! Forgiveness isn’t a bargain where each party gives and each party takes. Forgiveness isn’t a cop-out for bad behavior. Forgiveness is a freely given, undeserved gift for those who are given it. And it is takes a lot of strength to offer that free gift and expect nothing in return. But it is very freeing for those who discover the act of living unoffended lives.*

She can forgive her parents even if they never apologized and sincerely say “we were wrong”. It’s about hate and bitterness losing it’s hold on Emma, not about her parents repenting of all wrong and making amends for their wrongs. I’d love to see Snow and Charming right their wrongs, but Emma has control over how this affects her and I really want to see her personal development in this area. Fingers crossed that this is in store before the season ends!

Robin Hood’s duty to Zelena and the baby:

Does he really need to stay with her? Maybe I’m just super insensitive and not well versed in baby-daddy etiquette, but I feel like if you were manipulated into conceiving with the wicked witch who killed your wife and disguised herself as her, that should earn you a get-out-of-daddying-free card?! But I guess the poor child would be doomed with Zelena as the only parental influence in its life, so maybe its best for Robin Hood to stay.

…But I can’t even imagine how Robin + Zelena co-parenting will even work! How is he going to agree with any decisions that Zelena makes for their child? She killed his wife. Marriages (or any relationship) can’t last without some trust. And I’m just guessing he probably has zero trust in her? The child might motivate him to stay, but there is no way that Robin Hood will find a way to co-parent with Zelena, right? Just no way.

Any thoughts on how that might work?

Thanks to you both for the podcast. It is a highlight every week.

-Becca

P.S- from my first e-mail from the Cruella episode, you deduced that I’m from central time zone based on my OUAT time slot of 7-8pm. You are correct :) I’m deep in the heart of Texas. Wish I was closer to California- I’d come to RegalCon!

————–

Hi Colleen and Jeff!

First, you both made comments that you felt may get you some nasty emails during the Heart of Gold main show. Here’s mine

Hehe, Just kidding! I think everything you said was right on point…both of you.

OHHHH MY!! This was a great episode…and then the last minute happened and I GROOOOANNED out loud. I had a feeling it was coming and I was yelling “no, don’t do it, don’t let it be a baby”…and then, there it was, the Telenovelas moment of OUAT. I feel we have enough going on with Robin and Regina without this being necessary. I know it’s bad, but initially, I was like “so what if she’s pregnant-she totally deceived you and is a rotten person, just take Roland and leave with Regina!” But, Robin’s honor would never let him do that and Zelena knows this. So, the only reasoning that makes this ok, is if it’s a fake pregnancy. Then again, the other thing I thought was “might as well go big or go home”…what if Regina is pregnant too?? We did have the episode where she told Emma she eats like a child and was eating healthy, kale salad…? After re-watching, I was better with the ending realizing that it hopefully is a last ditch desperate attempt to keep Robin from Regina and get back into Storybrooke. Fingers crossed. Switching gears: I think my theory on the sorcerer being her father got another boost. The apprentice told Lilly if she noticed how the necklace complimented her tattoo so well, and the Hat has a star with a crecsent moon…thoughts? By far, the Emma/Regina chemistry and friendship was the best this episode…I could watch their scenes together over and over. I love watching their relationship develop. It has progressed perfectly. Not too rushed or too slow. Ok…the scene. Probably one of the best scenes the entire series in my opinion. Emma wanting to shoot Lilly and Regina talking her down. Written, acted, and shot beautifully!! Even if we all knew she wasn’t going to do it-it was sooo well done! I still have goose bumps. I feel the end scene overshadowed how great of a moment this truly was, but I just loved it! Now everyone is coming for the author!! I think he and the apprentice have big parts to play in the finale which hopefully means we’ll finally get to see him released from the hat!

Things that made me go hmmm….why did Regina give Maleficent Belle’s heart? Why not put it in your vault with the heart lockers and protection spells? And Maleficent is just the “Mistress of all Evil” we all knew. She couldn’t stop Will from going out the window-or Dragon out and go get it back? She lost her baby to the Charmings, and did nothing really to stop them-sooooo…basically, she puts people to sleep? I still think Belle gave her heart willingly-but when Regina told her to “run along and forget all this” is when she forgot. Why did Hook and Belle stop trying to get the Apprentice out of the hat? He was so upset about it and it seemed like a good mission and sure better than what they’ve been doing. Why did the apprentice tell Lilly everything and not Emma? He should have gotten them both together as young ladies, told them both what was up, and they could have helped eachother this whole time! Just saying. Unless that would have messed with Emma’s destiny to be the savior…? He basically told Lilly she was doomed from the get go…I kinda feel like he left her with no hope, and helped put her on her path for revenge. Just didn’t make sense, what do you all think?

Great episode. Lilly and Emma being eachother Ying and Yang is going to get very interesting. Can’t wait for next week and all the “Mother’s!”
Big love to both of you and all the Oncers. Talk to you next week, Trace

The next time you’re on a bus, take note of the rambling old man in the back. He may actually have all the answers you’re looking for. Now onto the Things I Learned this week on the episode, Lily.

#1. Pay no attention to the
sorcerer behind the curtain.

#2. Fate is like that annoying
little fly that keeps buzzing in
your ear.

#3. Think twice before calling a
women’s friend a loser.

#4. Emma needs a bumper
sticker that reads, “I brake for
wolves”.

#5. Sometimes one pack of Advil
just isn’t enough.

#6. Free burgers for a week
would make anybody smile.

#7. Regina was so close when
she stated that fate was a
female dog, it turns out it’s
actually a wolf.

#8. Emma might have learned her
fast and furious driving skills
from Dominic Torreto.

#9. Lily is a fan of Star Wars.

#10. Even the apprentice has
to pay bus fare.

Is Cruella dead? Remember what Zelena said in “Heart of Gold”?

Email points:

First Time Giving Feedback

From Becca

The Cruella episode was one of the darkest episodes I can remember in the history of Once. I felt like I was watching a creepy crime procedural drama, not a sunday night-fairy tale drama on the 7-8pm time slot on sunday evening!!!!!
Memorables:
1. Seeing Cruella as a little girl at the very beginning- she had a really creepy look about her. Her eyes looked darkened and she just seemed like a very disturbed little girl. But as soon as her mother appeared, it immediately led me to believe that she was disturbed because her mother exerted such dominant and strict regulations over her (and chased her with the dalmatians). What a twist when her mother was actually the sane one and little Cruella was the troubled one to begin with!

Are we to believe that Cruella was running away in the beginning scene after killing daddy #1? If so, that’s a VERRYYYY young age to begin killing other people. Shocking and more disturbing than any other content that I’ve even seen on OUAT. She makes Rumple, Regina-and heck, even Zelena- look like angels!

I just saw a 20/20 episode this week where a mother and daughter were pitted against each other in the murder cases of the mother’s two husbands- first the father of the daughter, and next the stepfather. It was presumed that they died from heart attacks, but upon exhuming their bodies, antifreeze was found in their kidneys. The mother was convicted, yet she still claims the daughter did it. It was an altogether disturbing episode of 20/20 and I guess that caused me to have extra heebie-jeebies with this weeks OUAT eposide, since the nature of their poisoning deaths were similar to the Once episode.

2. The author writing Cruella’s story to prevent her from ever killing another human- smart move on his part. And I love that the spilled ink accounts for her classic black+white ‘do. But I’m still curious about what all happened when that ink spilled. Earlier in the restaurant/bar/dance scenes, he (the author) mentioned that there’s no telling what would happen if the ink spilled. Are we to believe that all that will happen is that it will stain white hair? Because according to this episode, all that spilled ink will do is stain white hair. But they the author seemed to imply earlier in the episode that something more serious than stains would result from spilled ink.

3. To add to this episode’s shock factor, it was crazy that Cruella ended up being the “most evil” of all the three lady villains of this season since (until this episode) she had mainly been a source of comedic relief with silly jokes and funny one-liners.

4. Emma: the entire episode her eyes looked blood shot and you could really tell that she was emotionally upset with all that has happened between her and her parents. My favorite part of the show continues to be any scene with Emma+Regina. They have excellent chemistry as friends, enemies, and “co-moms” of Henry. I continue to be filled with warm fuzzy feelings whenever Emma tries to look out for Regina- like in this episode when she gives her a gun to protect herself as she prepares to help Robin Hood. Also, seeing them work together to find Henry- they’ve come so far in their relationship. It’s amazing how throughout their relationship, it has been henry who has bound them together and compelled them to work out their differences. This is ironic because the object of contention in season 1/season 2 was…HENRY. The thing that pittted them against each other has ultimately drawn them together in a relationship of mutual respect and dare I say… love? Maybe love is too strong of a word but it is obvious that they want the best for each other. which I think qualifies as love.

Thanks for considering my thoughts.
You guys are awesome!

Becca

From Chris Tipton

I have to say, I am extremely disappointed with this episode. I’ve been so pumped about this all season, and it was a major letdown for me. I did enjoy the twist that Cruella knew the author, but that’s pretty much where the good ends (except for Victoria Smurfits performance, she was as enchanting as ever) for starters, they didn’t even clearly illustrate what Cruellas happy ending was. I guess kill the author, which…why??!! She’s the one who screwed him over! This show pretty much threw out their own idea about evil being made, because cruella was apparently a little demon from the beginning. This episode made me feel absolutely nothing for her, so the episode title makes no sense. The author also confused me. I don’t understand what he meant by this place has no time? I wonder is this was like a parallel England. If so, does this open up the possibility for multiple parallel universes? Does every realm have a parallel place with no time? I really hope they explain this better. Their literally making the author a god figure. He can do anything he wants with that pen. This also bothers me….totally throws out free will and fate.

Emma…..I’m pretty disturbed by Emma right now. Every one is telling her she should forgive her parents and she just refuses, even after she so easily forgave Hook and Regina, as they even pointed out to her. And then, there’s the ending.i absolutely hate this. Emma killed cruella to protect Henry!!! She didn’t know that Cruella couldn’t hurt him, cruella was screaming that she would kill him!!! I find this very stupid to be the thing that begins to turn her dark. Just another reason why I don’t like this episode.

The charmings…..oh my, how I can’t stand the charmings rights now. I understand making mistakes, that makes us human, but to me, part of what makes a hero is repenting of those mistakes. Snowing is not doing this, they just keep trying to justify themselves to Emma. It’s one of the more frustrating elements I’ve seen in this show in a while. I really miss the snowing of season one.

Rumple and belle….I felt for rumple. He really does love belle, he just can’t see past his power. It was heartbreaking when belle made the comment about will, thankfully it was Regina talking. I wonder if belle gave her heart willingly. I didn’t enjoy seeing Regina like this again, I hope she’s not reverting

Overall such a poor episode. Most of the writing seemed jumbled and didn’t really make sense, the Emma arc has become terrible, Snow and charming just suck ,and Cruellas backstory left much to be desired, THEY DIDNT EVEN TELL US HOW SHE GOT TO THE E.F….the more I write the more I hate it. Victoria Smurfits acting is really the only saving grace….4/10 skinned authors

From Chris

Hi guys,

I’m bummed: They killed off a great character like Cruella and keep a dull, boring one like Zelena. I really wish they would have reversed roles and Cruella was the baddie for the rest of the season.

Jeff, did you see shades of Revenge of the Sith in the end? Emma throwing Cruella off the cliff reminded me of Palpatine throwing Mace Windu out of the window and Emma’s look at the end reminded me of Anakin looking out at the lava fields after Order 66 was completed. Colleen, you mentioned that Emma killed Cruella for the right reasons and I don’t disagree with that but I will point out that the fact that he had a noble reason (saving Padmé) didn’t prevent Anakin from falling to the Dark Side. Evil acts are evil acts no matter the intention.

This may have been my favorite episode title, not only because the title references my favorite Rolling Stones song, Sympathy for the Devil, but the way the plot unfolds is similar to the way the song unfolds. The song begins with a seemingly polite man introducing himself and it isn’t until the final verse that he admits that he is Lucifer and is unapologetically evil. Cruella spent the whole episode in the guise of a polite young lady and at the end, revealed that she was unapologetically evil as well. I’m going to miss Victoria Smurfit, she made a very horrible character a real treat to watch.

Keep up the great work. Your podcast keeps me entertained while working 3rd shift.

From Trace

Hi Colleen and Jeff,

I guess I am a dark person, because I would blast anyone off a cliff attempting to kill my child. If this is the thing that makes her dark, I’m not buying it though. Heros have killed-Charming and Snow killed many guards etc…while taking back the kingdom. I mean really, Snow intentionally got Regina to kill her own mother…and her heart just got a lil dark spot! Petulant child fits perfectly! I am annoyed that she can forgive everyone else, but won’t try harder with her parents. And if I was Snow, I would have called her out on it-they were friends after all before she was her mother. I wonder what Regina would have done if she had gotten their first-which by the way-ugh…Rumple! He planned the whole thing. I loved the conversation with Hook, Regina and Emma in the woods, Emma’s retort to Regina about holding a grudge on a 10 yr old for spilling a secret was so funny. Ok…way to go Regina with the Belle heart scheme! What a great job done by Emilie De Raven…when she said “Will kisses sooo much better that you”…I could almost hear Regina’s snarky tone…so great!! I have a theory that it will actually be Belle or Hook that makes the ultimate sacrifice in the end of this season-perhaps even becoming the dark one to save Rumple or Emma. Belle’s happy ending was always to be the Hero, and Hook’s is Emma so he would do anything to save her. What do you think? I know a lot of the fandom is theorizing that Emma may become the dark one, but I just don’t think she’ll go THAT dark, and it’s seems to obvious. But, turning Emma into the big bad for next season sure would be a great twist and would make “for a better story” per the author.

What an awesome back story. Not at all what I expected. So, her happy ending was to be able to kill again? Great twist and that’s just pure craziness, but it did fit her character. Very dark with the “mom death by dogs” and she cleaned up those pelts into a coat very quickly! Ok, sorry-but that was creepy in a such a good way-we can finally call her a Queen a darkness. I really loved the costumes, settings and music in this episode. All the nods and twists to the original story was so well done. How fun! Very Gatsby. The author is a genius for writing that note about Cruella. I think Emma taking out Cruella served 2 purposes for Rumple. One, it helps turn Emma dark, and 2-I think he is going to extract the ink from Cruella-it didn’t spill on her just to turn her into a cartoon character. If Emma does go darkish, I hope its true loves kiss from Snow to save her…wouldn’t that be great?? Ok…my heart is pitter pattering thinking about it. I also liked the idea of the realms being story based. Just think now where they can go with this?? I can’t wait for a bit more info on the author. How was he chosen? Does he just write himself a portal to a realm if he wants to go?

Things that make me go hmmm…Evil is made not born. That has been the premise of this whole show. Except when you are Cruella and born a psychopath! I have to say I love that she is just evil for no reason and is proud of it…”I’m just an awful person darling and I left her out here to die”. No remorse-own it Cruella! But, it did make me wonder why they chose that trope at this time. And how did she get to the Enchanted forest?

All in all-a GREAT episode! I’m ready for the Swan Queen road trip! Big Love to you both and all the Oncers! Talk to you next week! Trace

From Chris Tipton

WOW I’m so impressed! Once upon a time has really stepped it up! I thinks this half season has probably been the best stretch the show has ever had! On to my thoughts

Emma…she had ALOT of wisdom in the little bit she was in. It was a relief to hear that she was mad at what snowing did to Lily, because I kind of thought she was only mad at them lying to her. The only thing I hated is that she forgave Hook so easily but yet she’s crucifying her parents in pretty much the same situation.Jennifer Morrison is acting the heck out of this… Also, those eyes! Yesterday was her birthday, so it was unfortunate that she wasn’t in the episode much but what she was in was awesome!

Rumple….it was nice to see rumple go back to Neal’s apartment. I liked the twist that rumples evil is slowly killing him In a world without magic. I loved his quip about the doctors having small minds. It was nice to see the elixir make an appearance in our world and get a mention of Walsh and see where he worked. Rumple is so caniving, the way he pushed robin to be with “Marian” even his own mortality can’t sway him. I really feel he will never be redeemed. Also I found it hilarious his heart is literally hollow lol. Still waiting to see what his happy ending is. I think it may be finding away to get rid of his dark one powers.

Robin….so good to finally get his backstory. It was cool that they went way back to even before he was Robin Hood. I liked the twist that he already was married to Marian and she worked with him. Before this episode I didn’t really care for them as a couple and after this episode, I really would ship them, so it’s a shame she’s dead. I loved when the show sort of poked fun at itself when robin mentioned the self explanatory name of the elixir. It was cool to see Will in Oz, but I’m tired of the show trolling us. They keep teasing us like they’re going to finally tell us what happened to Ana, but no,it was just about his sister. I’m starting to think we may never find out. I don’t even understand why they brought him in. He still has no purpose. One thing that confused me….why did Regina need Emma to look robin up for her if he had a phone with her number? Maybe he had her number but she didn’t have his? I was very impressed with the actress who plays Marian. I had never liked her at all before, even found her annoying, but she did great this episode, especially the part where she comes in rumples room, she played that amazingly. I loved their explanation of why Robin looked different in s2….very clever, as was the explanation of how he got his name. I have issues with Robin saying stealing for someone else makes you a hero. Stealing is wrong no matter what

Zelena….hooooly cow!! Rebecca madder put on one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in this show! I was completely enraptured in her villainry. I’m so glad she’s back and I hope she sticks around! It was a relief to finally get an explanation of what happens to her when rumps “killed” her. I was always against the theory that zelena was Marian because I wondered how she could have stayed cloaked when they left SB so it was nice to have that addressed. I can’t believe she managed to turn Robin away from Regina. It makes me feel better about when Marian just conveniently came down with the frozen heart thing again, it was zelenas doing to get robin out of SB. I still can’t get over how amazing zelena was in this episode. She was far better then she ever was in s3. If she keeps this up she’ll become my best villain. Speaking of villains, I’m so disappointed cruella has take such a back seat. I CANT WAIT for next week as it will be all about her. I love zelenas plan. Her happy ending is to destroy Regina. I’m not sure how the author could write that, maybe force him to love zelena. Who knows, but I can’t wait to see what it is.

What an episode!!! For the second week In a row…10/10 coal hearts

Few thoughts.

Not sure Regina has made up her mind.

Why was Gold having chest pain when talking with sleeping Belle?

Why did Gold say I will come back for you if I can? (To Belle)

How come Emma is so ready to forgive and give others second chance but not her parents?

Looking forward to main show, Love you guys

—————–

From Andrea

Hello,

Just some random Heart of Gold thoughts.

1. You guys and I think the General Audience forget that Rumple as the Dark Curse in him, unlike Regina and Hook whose villain behavior is all them, Rumple actually has something evil inside influencing/corrupting him, so I give him a pass than the other two.

2. If doing evil deeds causes one to get sick, then Regina and Hook should be in ICU. Hook is a pirate, did thievery, sold out boys to Pan, while Regina killed hundreds of villagers, burnt hundreds of villages, killed husband and father, etc..

3. The two Mills sisters have something in common. They both engage in sex with men not fully in their control Regina with Graham minus his heart, and Zelena disguising herself as Marian without Robin’s knowledge. Stay classy sisters.

4.This episode was also a reminder that Zelena kept Rumple a prisoner over a year and he is still traumatized by it. Loved Robert Carlyle playing PTSD in the hospital scene with Zelena. Proof yet again why he is the best actor on the show.

5. This episode seemed like a retcon to bring respectablility to Outlaw Queen. I think the audience was okay with ship until Marian was brought back and Robin making the commitment to her at the beginning of 4A. Only when Robin broke the commitment by the vault screwing in Smash the Mirror did the audience flip out, as seen by the negative feedback on twitter and facebook and media. So decided to make Marian not really Marian but the problem is Robin believed it to be Marian at the time and he still cheated on her with Regina. Not cool.

6. Favorite moment was when Emma called out her parents for using the ‘i was manipulated, its not my fault’ defense. Finally! Emma was absolutely right that just because you were manipulated does not absolve you from your actions. Regina has not learned this lesson by her statement at the end of the episode where she accused Rumple of making her a monster and not accepting that yes, he manipulated her but she still chose that path of darkness when she could have walked away.

7. Actually felt bad for Regina during one point of this episode.(i’m not a Regina fan). She genuinely looked hurt when Rumple told her that his affections for her were limited. I think on some level she sees him as a mentor/possibly father figure and she really did look hurt at his admission.

Have a good day!

Andrea

From Trace

Hi Colleen, Jeff and all the Oncers,

Ok…WOW! I think was a great episode. It reminded me so much of season one, and even though I was one that had theorized Marion was really “Marzelena”, the reveal was still soooo awesome! Can we all give some kudos to Rebecca Mader who just killed it? She was so deliciously wicked! “She’s as dead as well……your son”. Now, that’s how you be evil ladies of darkness! Colleen, do you also still think Rumple has secret plans for goodness? He now has a purpose again, to avenge his sons death-and that’s when Rumple is at his “rumpley” best. Why does he need Emma to go dark? Maybe because she is the only one who can truly defeat Zelena per season 3B. But then I got confused, because I thought Zelena could only be defeated by the strongest “Light magic”, and if she’s dark, then how does that work? The look on Rumples’ face when he realized it was Zelena…priceless! Ok, a quick awwwwwww…for Marion. At least getting poofed away was better than execution per the evil Queen I’m sure, but sad-and poor Roland. He thought he had his mom back. When Regina was on the phone with Zelena-her face, her reactions…fantastic. What decision do you think she’ll make? I think she’s either going to tell Rumple to screw off, or ACT like she chosen Robin and try this undercover thing again. Oh…wait. What if she tells Emma, then Emma fakes going dark and that is what we’ve been seeing in the promos-is actually her acting dark? Shout out to Will! So nice to have him in the story-and this is the second time we’ve heard about his sister. (Once in Wonderland). OUAT does not do that without a reason. Ok, The author. “You may be the biggest pain in the ass I have ever had the displeasure of writing for.” Best line of the season so far!! All the oncers yelled a hell ya to that quote Sunday I’m sure. The reason this half season is so great, is that we can theorize again…there is so much going on and that could or could not happen. Does anyone else think that its possible someone else has part of the 6 leaf clover? How did she get it from Robin? Who knows who else is not truly themselves??? Do you think this season will wrap up this year like in the past? I feel there is so much going on that it must be a cliffhanger into next season. We have the Author, Cruella’s story, Emma going dark, Charming’s redemption, Zelena, Robin and Regina, the apprentice still in the hat, where and who is the sorcerer, Cora coming, Lilly and Maleficent, Will’s back story………..and only 4 episodes to go??? Lions and Tigers and Bears-OH MY!!

CAN’T WAIT till Sunday. This has been the best season since season 1. I do love the Frozen gang-but have to say-I’m glad we’re back!!!! Big Love to both of you and all the Oncers. Looking forward to all the feedback! Talk to all of ya next week!! Trace

Hi Jeff and Colleen,

I hope you guys enjoyed “The Heart of Gold” episode as much as I did. Loved it! There were so many awesome moments. I just wanted to send you a couple of Easter Eggs in case you missed them. The first one is the Hidden Mickey in the drawer Robin Hood is looking through in the Wizard of Oak Shop! (See attached photo)

IMG_0253

IMG_0255

The other one is in the scene with Robin Hood and Will as they are saying goodbye at the OZ doorway Curtain. If you look at the very bottom of the edge of the screen shot there is a broken Tin Man lying on the ground. In the original story he chopped himself into pieces and they were each replaced by tin. I thought it was really cool that they put that in there. so glad I caught it on a rewatch this week. Just thought I’s share with you. Have a great weekend and Big Love right back to you guys!

THEORIES

I have had lots of theories in the past that usually never pan out so when we found out that Zelena was really Marian, it was like winning the lottery! I was so excited! Now I understand other listeners may have predicted the same thing when they saw the preview for Heart of Gold but how many of them on this podcast called it before season 4 ever began? I have included 3 sound files from previous podcast that prove this fact. I don’t mean to make it all about me, it’s just that I was super hyped that I FINALLY GOT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notes:

In the opening scene, we see young Cruella running away from home. Was that the first time she did, or was is one time of many?

How did Madeline (Cruella’s mother (Played by Anna Galvin)) have control over the dogs? That must have been some kind of magic. How did Madeline become magical? What is her backstory?

Throughout the episode, Madeline used dog training terms on Cruella, like “Stay (Here)”, “Be Quiet”, “Learn to Obey”, etc.

When Cruella goaded Malefiecent into turning into a dragon, and in that form, Cruella used her magical influence to cause Maleficent to “take a nap”. It is interesting to note that that the term nap was what Regina used when she performed a sleeping spell on young Snow’s horse in the episode “Enter the Dragon”.

When Regina went to visit Belle at Gold’s pawn shop, she seemed to accept Regina’s offer rather quickly. I wondered if the Belle we saw was not the real Belle. Shape shifting is almost the norm is the stories now, and Belle was some kind of vision to Rumpel on Neverland.

The Author’s name is Isaac.

Gold had the quill. The quill must be used with the special ink to write or change a story.

We see Rumpel’s dark heart with just a glint of goodness. Rumpel told Belle that if his heart is completely taken over by darkness, he will “In a matter of speaking, he’ll die”, meaning “I’ll lost the ability to love”.

There were lots of threats and lots of playing “chicken” with characters tonight. Gold used Regina’s redemption to question her threat of killing Belle by crushing her heart if Gold told Zelena that Regina was coming to destroy her.

The term “Hero” was used to make those that used it to validate, invalidate or limit their actions. For instance the use of “Heroes don’t kill,” by Cruella, and Emma called her parents “Heroes are Paragon’s of virtue” but Hook told Emma, “Even Heroes make mistakes, love”, and Regina told Emma that Snow had been trying to make up for her mistake for a long time.

We had a Romeo and Juliet moment, even.

—————

From Cindy

My 1st impression after tonight’s episode. It started 4 years ago with a nagging question that kept coming from fans. Gee, I wonder who actually wrote Henry’s book? A 4 year long ongoing fan quest for the author, which led to a season long quest for our characters to find the author. For 4 years with every new character we met the same question arose. Is he the author? Ooh! I bet she’s the author. August must be the author! Ooh what if it’s cap man! He sees everything! Henry’s book has been the centerpiece of our OUAT story. It was the “heart” of the truest believers’ stories. I felt like I was among the truest believers. Henry’s book represented hope for happy endings. But now that the authors have been identified, I think I’m a little sad. I realize I rather liked not knowing who the author was. I liked imaging how stories came to life in Henry’s book. I think Henry’s book has lost a bit of its mystique. Ariel was right about happy endings. They don’t come from the author or the book.

Email points:

From Aleana

THEY REFERENCED WALT!! WALT DISNEY :)
Damn that other author forsaken his duty, changing the stories just for a better story but now he’s out of the book! Really well written episode. That speech about the authors recording great stories, August told was incredibly poignant!

J – I loved August’s monologue, too.

Snow: “If we keep this up were no different than Gold” – It’s interesting how Ariel previously said villains go about getting their happy endings in the wrong way, so I wonder what will happen to the Charming’s if they keep lying, are they themselves authoring their destiny down a a dark path? But now Emma knows, its the lying though that can diverge someone from their current path.

J – Good point. How did Snow and Charming get their “happy ending” with all the lies and secrets.

My theory is Regina and Emma going to leave Storybrook to save Robin and found Lily in the process also think Zelena is Maid Marion in disguise

Looks like there is a now a loophole for Snow and Charming in regards to earning forgiveness for taking away Malificent’s daughter. If the Author manipulated the story and forced the Apprentice into sending Lilly to another realm, then maybe he did the same to Snow and Charming. Maybe Snow and Charming weren’t truly in control of their actions and were at the mercy of the Author. Did the Author believe having these expectant parents kidnap another woman’s child for the sake of saving their own would be the better story to tell? Whatever happened, when all was said and done, Snow and Charming suffered the same fate as Malificent because they also lost their baby girl. I guess that falls under the category of magic has a price. I hope the Author cannot *find the quill* because then he can’t rewrite anyone’s story or steal anyone’s happy ending. He has done more than enough damage already.

J – The author could be behind a lot of the bad choices made along the way. Is that blame shifting or in this case, reality? What about the Author re-writing his way to a happy ending for himself?

—————–

From Chris Tipton

The trend continues, every episode just continues to improve! I would maybe have to say this might be my favorite episode yet…top 5 at least. On to my points

Cruella and Regina snark battling. We seriously need more of this, Cruella is one of the few characters who can rival Regina with sass

It was a relief to hear Maleficent say that Cruella and ursula were just a means to an end, since that is what we’ve been saying all season. It was also cool to finally see how they got to our world.

This apprentice……. is immensely powerful. He can just create portals on command! I’m really starting to think he is the Sorcerer masquerading as an apprentice. If he isn’t, holy crap how powerful is the Sorcerer!!?? So about Emma’s darkness, the apprentice said “if it sees the light of day on distant shore”…That must be the loop hole for Emma to go dark in storybrooke. I also really want to know what that thing was he had in his hand. He used it to banish the author and perform the spell. Is it some kind of wand? My favorite moment of the episode was when the apprentice said what I’ve been screaming all season….that Emma is just like any human, with free will and the potential for good and evil. I almost shouted when he said that.

J – It could have been a wand. It looked like the Apprentice was signing The Author’s warrant to be trapped in the book. It was reminiscent of Rumpel, being so dangerous in the outside world, he had to be locked up. This time in a book.

Rumple….Hes such a creep sitting there holding belles hand talking to her while she’s asleep. Hes seriously delusional to think there is any chance she would go back to him. So it would seem he was on to Regina and he was just looking for the right time to expose her. I do wonder how he could tell so easily it was rubbish since as far as I can remember hes barely seen the book. Rumple has to have Robin, what else could have that much control over Regina? Jane Espenson is such an amazing writer. Rumple’s line “pain fades unless you feed it, and this could be the meal you really don’t want” was incredible and poignant. Nice to finally see what we all figured, Lily is Maleficents child. I guess Lily can’t be Cruella like i theorized lol

Snow and charming….Charming just kept digging himself a deeper hole. The idea to destroy the page was ridiculous and he just kept lying to everyone, even Henry! I’m very proud of Snow. She had great character development and it was awesome when she finally stood up to charming and told him they had to do the right thing and come clean. It’s always better to tell the truth, well done snow!

Emma……The irony of Maleficent having a unicorn for a best friend, since a unicorn had a hand, or a horn, (rimshot) in her losing her child. Seeing Abba Ross again was very cool. Shes amazing as young Emma. I am confused how Charming took seeing Emma as a baby meant she would be good. Maybe it was symbolic, that she would be pure and good like a baby her whole life. It was also ironic that Emma said no one gets to decide who she was, since that’s basically what her parents tried to do in the flashback. It seems she didn’t even get mad at what they did, just that they lied to her.

What snowing did to Maleficent part 2…..It made sense that Maleficents child came from an egg. It reminded me of the s1 episode dreamy. My theory that Stephan is the dad is dead. I had questioned whether what they did to her would warrant all the build up, and wow did it ever. It was absolutely despicable what they did to Maleficent. Whether they thought they could return the child or not it was still awful. I completely sympathize with Maleficent now. While revenge is not the way, I can totally see why shes so hell-bent on getting it! If Lily absorbed all that evil, why was she so seemingly good last half season?

J – Lily wasn’t all that good: Breaking into houses, Shop lifting, etc.

The authors reveal…..I was surprised they revealed this in this episode, i honestly thought we wouldn’t get that till the season finale but i loved it nonetheless. It was amazing when August referenced WALT Disney. So technically alot of theories were right, Walt Disney was an author! I like the idea that all authors until this one were just recorders and this one found a way to tamper with things. This gives me an idea. The author seems to like to do bad things to stories to make the more interesting. What if page 23 is what actually happened to Regina and Robin, but the author tampered with it, and made Regina run away and become bitter, causing her to become the evil queen. He would think it makes for a better story then 2 people just going off and falling in love. So i guess that’s my page 23 theory. This was an amazingly epic episode. I don’t like giving these but i have to for this one. 10/10 wooden man babies!!

J – Maybe there was more that the Author “caused” that we will discover.

—————–

From Chris

Hey Guys,

What if “A man named Walt” is really Walt from “Lost”? (Cue suspenseful music) :)

I understand why they couldn’t have done it, because we’d see who “The Author” was a mile away but I would have loved if “The Author” had been someone like JK Rowling, Stephen King, Stan Lee, or George Lucas. Hey, we know Lucas is quite comfortable editing and changing his stories already. :) What are Harry Potter and Marvel Comics, if not modern day fairy tales and mythology? And Stephen King has already appeared as himself in his Dark Tower series, which was a big influence on Lost. Just my bit of dream casting.

Keep up the great work and Rumplestiltskin forever…Dearies!

From Trace

Hi Colleen and Jeff,

First: OMG-Cindy wrote in last week with her theory about the Regina book page and Cora being involved….loved it! What a great theory, and had to point that out.

I yelled at Snow and Charming more times this episode that I can count. So many decisions were made that made no sense. However, I think we learned HOW they got to be the Charmings. By never wanting to be the kind of people that would do such a thing to others much less a child. Thank God they realized they were on the same path again and redirected and told Emma the truth. Snow said “Hero’s do what’s right, not what’s easy” So true. I wanted to see the scene when they had to go back and tell her the baby was gone, how sad. Snow and Charming were the villains here….…….right?

Not sure, because, if the Author manipulated the story, then who’s truly the villain? The Apprentice clearly said to the Author “How could you FORCE ME to do that to that child?” So, where was the free will there? The true Author records the story so we make our own choices and destiny, but in this case-the author is the villain for taking that away. (Nice call Colleen). This puts the heroes and villains on the same side. If these stories were truly “embellished or changed” then we really don’t know which stories are true and who is good or evil and could change the entire series and stories we’ve seen thus far.…like Robin and Regina. If Regina meets Robin in the pub and runs off with Robin…that would have changed EVERYTHING as we know it. What if Rumple never meets the Seer?? How interesting could this get trying to find out what really happened in all these stories, and what was manipulated. Time for the good guys and bad guys to go get that Author together. I say the only way this plays out is for them to all realize they have to team up to get their happy endings. It still doesn’t excuse the Charming’s though for how they’ve been acting now. All the lying to Emma and then yelling at Henry-geez…chill out grandpa!

Way to go Oncers…Lilly is the lost child like we all thought, now-who’s the Daddy? I still say it’s the Sorcerer, what do you all think? I loved that Regina and Henry were able to read each other and pull off the page switch. I also still think that Rumple is up to something we all don’t know, especially with his speech to Belle, (sleeping again of course). I think he knows Regina is playing both sides and is using that somehow. He needs her, or is protecting her, otherwise she’d be a bug right now. His speech to Belle was intriguing and forshadowy (is that a word?) Especially with him holding his heart. I hope Henry being the truest believer is a key to this whole story, perhaps even an author someday? Nice shout out to Walt.

Things that made me go hmmm… Maleficent is the “Mistress of all Evil?” Really? Because no one would have taken that egg away from me I’ll tell you that! Put Charming to sleep or poof the egg somewhere else. I think Rumple is going to get Robin to use against Regina…but really? He has Henry right there. Which to me is proof he has other motive. And won’t hurt his grandson. Maybe deep down he believes he can get his happy ending if he helps other get theirs? I’m trying to see the positive in Rump here. Emma should practice harder, because if a curtain rod can take down the Savior then everyone is in trouble. The use and not use of magic confuses me sometimes. Clearly, August told them he was trapped in the book because he was bad. So…let’s just let him out and see what happens? How about a protection spell on the doorway?

Can’t wait to see where they go with the story and crossing my fingers for the Cruella and Will backstories. I think Will is involved with the Author and that’s his tie in, plus he did steal the looking glass from Maleficent. Big Love and Happy Easter to all! Trace

Put on some puppy mittens and warm up with some brandy, (that’s oh so nutmeg-y) because it’s time for, Things I Learned in the episode, Best Laid Plans.

#1. Don’t go grabbin’ Unicorns.

#2. If Emma ever writes a book,
she’ll never have to worry
about distribution costs.

#3. There will be no un-saving of
the savior on Henry’s watch.

#4. Add detect magic to the list of
capabilities that a smart phone
can do.

#5. Every mom dreams of owning
Maleficent’s sleepy time staff.

#6. Apparently witches also have
cold feet.

#7. Being trapped in a book can
leaving you feeling a bit
parched.

#8. There’s a good possibility that
baby Lily’s first words were
“nanu nanu”.

#9. Hallmark doesn’t make a
“we’re so sorry we took your
baby, made it evil and sent it
away to another land” card.

#10. Maleificent may have had a
one night stand with Smaug.

OBSERVATIONS:

LILY’S HAPPY ENDING

In a way, Emma took Lily’s happy ending from her, as well as broke her promise to remain friends with her no matter what. Once she learns this truth I feel she will be pretty upset. I have a feeling this reunion will not include hugs and humorous stories.

WHAT MAKES A VILLAIN

What would happen if the author didn’t manipulate the story?

Would Rumpel still have spoken with the seer?

What if Cora didn’t kill Daniel, Regina never learned magic, Zelena was never abandoned or Pan never left his son?

Did the author take away their chance for a happy ending by creating a better story or did he only provide reasons for what they inevitably would become?

Ultimately, we are who we are because of decisions we’ve made but what happens when you have been manipulated into those decisions?

Can you fault someone that has been lead and influenced to be a villain?

If the lives between a hero and villain were switched, would the outcome be the same? Are we all one decision away from becoming a villain and could a second chance alter the course of history for the better?

THEORIES:

ZELENA

This is an old theory but I feel it’s worth resurrecting. We all want Robin back but the only way that will happen is if something happens to Marian. What I would really like to see is Zelena posing as Marian in attempts to rob Regina of her happy ending. We know she has this ability as we saw when she impersonated the Wizard. This is my last chance to see if this theory holds up or simply melts into a puddle of water.

THE AUTHOR

If being the author is a job, who will take up the mantle?
The three likely candidates are
#1. Henry, this choice is obvious and makes the most sense. It would bring the story full circle.
#2. Emma, if she has the ability to give the villains their happy ending does this mean she will take up the position? Maybe she is just special and has the ability to alter events in Storybrooke because she is the savior.
#3. August, this wooden man child has a gift for telling a good story like no other. I am captivated anytime he gives us more information on the past. This is more of a wish than an actual possibility though.

BURNING QUESTIONS:

What does Gold have that will make Regina do his bidding forever? Has he captured or imprisoned Robin while being out of Storybrooke for 6 months?

Who and where is the sorcerer?

Took a page from Jane Espensen’s “book” and attempted a writing sprint just for fun. Please consider this for both your excellent podcast and/or blog… (Will try phoning it in, but shan’t make any promises —haven’t done any public speaking in eek! Nearly 30 years!)

“Best Laid Plans” worked well on so many levels, but what it did best was more than consider the differences between heroes and villians or whether magic is light or dark. It is a significant chapter in a much larger, still incomplete, morality play.

In this episode, the Charmings assumed that someone as different from them as a mother dragon did not deserve the same pity they would afford a stranger on the road. This is how the good can, out of ignorance, do evil. They served their own ends at an innocent’s expense.

The price they continue to pay for this misuse of magic is regret and the loss of their own child’s respect and trust.

Rumple, on the other hand, has assumed all along that he could use power to accomplish good —that noble intentions could justify any evil means, no matter how dark the end result. But feeling unlovable fed his childhood pain and being his own sole arbiter made him cruel. It was inevitable that he would became an affliction and danger to all he loved or loved him.

This is the price a Dark One pays for abuse of magic. He will destroy everything he wants to accomplish —not just once but over and over again— while always expecting different results each time. The very definition of insanity.

The Charmings are still learning from their mistake and still paying a price that has come between them and Emma. There are, as of this writing, some tantalizing clues that Rumple may also be on his own path to wisdom; following through on what may prove to be a literal “change of heart.”

In theory, this could indeed portend a most interesting role reversal betwixt Savior and Dark One. The “change of rules” sought from a renegade Author may not lead to the “happy ending” expected. In the end, it may well be Rumple needing Emma’s help and/or compassion that causes her to have to consider the same sort of choice that led her parents astray. …And it will be Rumple who will then have to succeed at saving her!
